Task Description:

The next generation of wireless networks (6G) offers exciting services and applications such as autonomous driving, augmented and virtual reality, telemedicine or the Internet of Everything, which benefit from multi-access edge computing (MEC) and caching at the edge. However, in many of these applications, resource management of the communication, computing and caching resources must be performed under uncertainty, i.e., without full knowledge of the available resources and network conditions. This uncertainty can have many causes. Varying channel conditions and interference are generally only partially known. Users may join the network randomly and leave it unplanned, their requests may change over time and the service providing nodes and the corresponding resources may be arbitrarily unavailable.

As a result, new resource management methods that are able to cope with this limited knowledge of the system need to be developed.

In this project, new resource management techniques shall be developed following two approaches. First, algorithms that take into account the uncertainty in communication systems and perform resource management without perfect knowledge of the network conditions should be defined. Second, mechanisms that aim at reducing the uncertainty shall be developed.

To this aim, methods of optimization and machine learning will be applied, for instance collaborative, distributed learning. The validation of the developed methods will be performed analytically, by means of simulation and evaluation in a Software-defined Wireless Network (SDWN) testbed.

Your profile:

Master of Science (M.Sc.) degree with very good performance in Electrical Engineering and Information Technology, Computer Science or related areas like Mathematics or Physics

Sound knowledge in one or several of the following areas: communications engineering, communication networks, signal processing, softwaredefined radio and software-defined networks, wireless communication systems

Excellent analytical skills, excellent skills in programming and in the simulation/implementation of communication systems, e.g., using
MATLAB, Python or C, C++
Good command of English, German knowledge is advantageous
High commitment, ability to work independently and in a team
Willingness to supervise Bachelor and Master Theses
Willingness to cooperate with partners of science and industry
