The Faculty of Medicine of the University of Zurich invites applications for a Professorship and Chair of Pediatric Cardiac Surgery. The professorship is based at the University Children's Hospital and encompasses research, teaching, and patient care.
We are seeking a dynamic, integrative personality with extensive clinical expertise and scientific experience in pediatric cardiac surgery, including surgery on adult patients with congenital heart defects. The successful candidate will hold a habilitation or an equivalent academic qualification, a specialist title in cardiac surgery, and the competence to independently perform even the most complex pediatric cardiac procedures, such as heart transplantation, surgical corrections for transposition of the great arteries, hypoplastic left heart syndrome, and similar conditions, as well as procedures such as extracorporeal mechanical support. As the appointee will lead the Department of Pediatric Cardiac Surgery, broad surgical expertise combined with proven leadership experience is required. The successful candidate will also have experience in leading a research group and clinical trials, securing competitive third-party funding, teaching students, supervising theses, and fostering the next generation of academics.
The Department of Pediatric Cardiac Surgery collaborates closely with the Department of Pediatric Cardiology, the Pediatric Anesthesiology, the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, as well as units of pediatric surgery. Established partnerships with other departments of the Children's Hospital provide opportunities for collaborations in patient outcome research and developmental pediatrics. Research collaborations also exist with the Institute of Regenerative Medicine of the University of Zurich, particularly in the field of heart valve and blood vessel tissue engineering.
The newly built University Children's Hospital offers state-of-the-art clinical facilities for pediatric surgery, including a hybrid operating room specifically adapted to the needs of pediatric heart surgery, modern diagnostic imaging equipment, and a pediatric intensive care unit. Excellent infrastructure for experimental and clinical research is available in the nearby Research and Teaching Building.
The University of Zurich is a highly attractive institution for cutting-edge research, offering numerous opportunities for collaboration across its faculties and university hospitals. The proximity of the Swiss Federal Insti-tute of Technology (ETH Zurich) is an additional asset. The University of Zurich is an equal opportunities employer and in particular strives to increase the percentage of women in leading positions. Therefore, qualified female researchers are encouraged to apply.
The University of Zurich sees researchers as modern leadership personalities who conduct excellent research - taking into account the Open Science principles - through their own research projects, promote excellent young researchers and who help to shape a forward-looking university with innovative research-based teaching.
