The University of Bern is the third-largest university in Switzerland. The positions are offered in the Katayev Research Group at the Department of Chemistry, Biochemistry, and Pharmaceutical Sciences (DCBP).


About the Positions

Two fully funded PhD positions are available in the Katayev Group at the University of Bern, supported by the SNSF and SNSF BRIDGE DISCOVERY programs.

These positions provide an exciting opportunity to work at the forefront of synthetic methodology, focusing on redefining molecular architecture through the development of cutting-edge catalytic platforms for functional group transfer using sustainable energy inputs:

  • PhD-I position: visible light & electricity

  • PhD-II position: mechanochemistry

Beyond fundamental discoveries, the projects emphasize applied and interdisciplinary dimensions.


Candidate Profile

We are looking for highly motivated candidates with a background in organic chemistry and a genuine interest in reaction design, catalysis, radical chemistry, and sustainable synthesis.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Prior experience in photochemistry, electrochemistry, mechanochemistry, or computational chemistry (advantageous but not required)

  • Curiosity, creativity, and enthusiasm for interdisciplinary research

  • Strong communication skills

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively
