PhD student position: Stem cells in lung regeneration and repair

Applications are invited for a PhD student position in the Lung Research Laboratory at the Department of Biomedical Research, University of Bern and the Department of Pulmonary Medicine, University Hospital Bern, Switzerland (Head: Prof. Thomas Geiser).

We are interested in lung regeneration after repeated alveolar epithelial injuries. We study the mechanisms of lung injury and repair of the alveolar epithelium and to identify drug targets. We are looking for a highly motivated candidate for a PhD studies under the Graduate School Program at the University of Bern (

The thesis project will study developing lung organoids using iPS cells (induced pluripotent stem cells). The project integrates basic cell biology, molecular biology and stem cell biology. The project will also involve generating disease specific lung organoids, to understand disease mechanism and for drug screening all the experiments will be performed in vitro. The Lung Research laboratory is a located at Murtenstrasse 50 and later in the new building of the Department of Biomedical research (, with state of art facilities.

Qualification: Highly motivated candidates holding a qualification equivalent to Master of Science in life science or biomedical sciences with interest to learn and work in an international team, prior experience working with embryonic stem cells or iPS cells preferred but not required.
PhD student position is for 3 years, salary according to the Swiss National Foundation (SNF), start date to be negotiated, but immediate start possible.
