The Project:
We are excited to announce the opportunity to join our team for the SNSF-Starting-Grant-funded "MACScar – Macrophage Aggregation Control against Scarring" project. Your journey with us begins with a significant milestone - building upon our recent, groundbreaking research that was featured on the cover of Science. This is your chance to be part of a cutting-edge project, contributing to a significant leap in understanding the biology of body cavity macrophages and innate immunity to sterile injury.

The Position:
This is a fully SNSF-funded PhD student position (100%) starting in March 2023 (flexible upon mutual agreement). The candidate will have the opportunity to i) study the inter- and intracellular molecular mechanism of GATA6+ cavity macrophage activation, ii) investigate how these mechanisms affect healing and scarring by using pre-clinical injury models, and iii) perform and analyze next-generation screening experiments such as scRNA-Seq and spatial transcriptomics. As graduate student you will be enrolled in the GCB.
You should hold a master's degree. The willingness to conduct animal experiments is mandatory and previous hands-on experience working with mice (FELASA) is ideal. Flow cytometry, multiphoton microscopy, and data analysis (ImageJ/R) will have to be mastered for this project. A very high motivation and an analytical mind are required to tackle the complexity of the proposed project.
Who we are:
The Zindel lab is part of the Department of Visceral Surgery and Medicine at the University of Bern and the University Hospital of Bern. The PI, Joel Zindel, holds both a Cloëtta and SNSF Assistant Professor position. We are passionate about macrophages and microscopes. In fact, we are embedded in a world-class microscopy community ( and we have our own cutting-edge multiphoton microscope (Leica Stellaris Dive) which we use to image the behavior of macrophages in their homeostatic niche in real-time. Check out the videos, they are worth a thousand words: We rely on animal models, and we do so compassionately and in strict adherence to the 3R principles and legal regulations. Then, we validate our findings from pre-clinical models in the human system (primary human cells/tissues) which we harvest through several cohort studies directly from the operating room.
