About the professorship in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology

The Department of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology – founded in 1882 by Erasmus Kittler – covers a broad spectrum of topics in basic and applied research as well as teaching.

The professorship for Embedded Systems Engineering is intended to cover research topics in the composition of hardware-software systems, embedded programming, realtime operating systems and platforms, development environments and development processes for embedded systems, or a related field.

A suitable research profile may address challenges in the following exemplary areas:

  • testing/verification of software & hardware together with their environment (with a focus on safety, security, resilience),
  • life cycle of hardware vs. software,
  • seamless integration of hardware-assisted functions,
  • software product lines,
  • software development for new computing platforms, eg quantum computers or neuromorphic computing.

A broad field of applications is desired, eg in biomedical engineering, Industry 4.0, or automation. Participation in teaching within the degree programs of the department is a prerequisite.

Your profile

We are looking for

  • a candidate with internationally outstanding qualification in an early career phase with promising potential (W2 Tenure Track) or
  • an experienced candidate with an outstanding scientific track record and international visibility (W3),

who can cover the field of Embedded Systems Engineering in research and teaching.

As part of the Frankfurt Rhine-Main metropolitan region, Technical University of Darmstadt and its surroundings are known by living internationality. The core element of this is a cosmopolitan climate with functional multilingualism at our university. Therefore, very good English and, at the latest after three years, good German language skills are expected.

Applicants for a W2 assistant professorship with tenure track must have the potential to develop an outstanding academic profile in the field of Embedded Systems Engineering. Initial significant publications and experience in third-party funding and teaching are desirable.

The assistant professorship is designated as a qualification professorship in accordance with §70 HessHG (Hessisches Hochschulgesetz). Accordingly, the duration of the academic activity during and after the doctorate should generally not exceed nine years or four years after the doctorate. This maximum duration may be extended in the event of birth or adoption of children. Furthermore, applicants should have completed their doctorate at a university other than TU Darmstadt or have worked scientifically outside TU Darmstadt for at least two years after completing their doctorate.

A tenure track is planned for the assistant professorship: After a successful probationary phase of six years, there is an immediate transition to a permanent professorship. For further information, please refer to the statutes for assistant professorships at the Technical University of Darmstadt.

Applicants for a W3 professorship must have an outstanding academic profile with highly visible research contributions in the field of Embedded Systems Engineering. A proven track record of successful collaboration in international research teams and significant experience outside TU Darmstadt are required. Experience in science management and with the management of large collaborative and industrial projects and in cooperation with industry are an advantage. For the W3 professorship, the recruitment requirements of §§ 67 and 68 HessHG (Hessisches Hochschulgesetz) apply.
