Open-Topic Junior Research Group Leader (m/f/d)


The profile line LIFE ( supports existing structures within the current focal research areas in the life sciences and medicine. At the same time, new and innovative topics are identified and promoted. The current focal research areas in LIFE are microbiology and chemical signals, infection biology, biodiversity, bio-geo-interactions, aging research, and bioinformatics and systems biology.


We provide an opportunity for you to pursue your own research project for six years. We seek applications from highly committed postdoctoral researchers with international experience and an outstanding scientific track record. Candidates from all scientific disciplines represented in LIFE are welcome to an innovative research project that stimulates our focal research areas. Projects that extend or interlink several focal research areas of LIFE, and/or connect to LIGHT or LIBERTY are highly welcome. The successful candidate is expected to actively collaborate within our interdisciplinary research community and to support science communication initiatives.


The junior research group will be hosted by a fitting institute at the Friedrich Schiller University, depending on the thematic focus, and will have access to the existing research infrastructure, also of the Cluster of Excellence “Balance of the Microverse”. The successful candidate will command his/her own budget for personnel and direct project costs. The opportunity for obtaining a professorship qualification (habilitation degree) will be given.


Your responsibilities:

  • Conduct interdisciplinary research thematically linked to the focal research areas of the profile line LIFE
  • Actively collaborate within our interdisciplinary research community
  • Develop a junior research group using external as well as internal funding sources


Your profile

  • A doctoral degree and significant postdoctoral research experience in any scientific discipline represented in the focal research areas of the profile line LIFE
  • An excellent track record in your research area
  • The ability to work creatively and independently toward developing your own research program
  • An integrative personality with leadership qualities and enthusiasm for actively participating in the dynamic research community within LIFE
  • Potential willingness for interdisciplinary collaboration

The full-time junior group leader position is available at the earliest convenient date and is limited to 6 years.
