Institute for Strategic Management
Fulltime, 40 hours/week
Starting November 01, 2023, and ending after 6 years

A qualification agreement can be concluded after a contract duration of two years (§ 27 of the Collective Bargaining Agreement). Pursuant to WU’s Personnel Development Plan, this position can only be fixed-term for up to six years. Once all objectives agreed upon in the qualification agreement have been fulfilled, the employment relationship can be made permanent. Employees who have successfully completed a qualification agreement are classified as associate professors. From an organizational regulation perspective they belong to the group of professors. Three years after successful completion of the qualification agreement, they are entitled to apply for promotion to full professor according to the By-Laws of WU § 43a.

Research and teaching at the Institute for Strategic Management focuses on how incumbents build a sustainable competitive advantage in the face of fundamental uncertainty and radical technological change.
The tenure track position’s focus is on “Digital Strategy”. Specifically, the position should explore
(1) how incumbents strategically use digital technologies (e.g., artificial intelligence, platforms, smart manufacturing technologies) to create and capture value with digital and digitally enhanced products as part of alliances and ecosystems;
(2) how incumbents transform themselves and their environments in the face of disruptive digital rivals and emerging technologies; and
(3) how digital tools change structures and processes of incumbents, in particular related to strategy-making and strategy implementation.

What to expect

  • Develop a strong international reputation in research on digital strategy and adjacent fields by publishing in high-quality outlets in line with the Department’s list of leading international journals
  • Active involvement in the international academic community (e.g., through cooperation with renowned international colleagues specializing in digital strategy; presentations as well as organization of sessions and/or workshops at leading management conferences; participation in and/or leadership of professional association committees; and serving in Editorial Boards)
  • Acquire third-party research funds
  • Support and guide PhD students and postdoctoral researchers
  • Teach 90 contact hours (four WU standard courses) per year on digital transformation, digital strategizing, and the application of data analytical methods (e.g., machine Learning, natural language processing) in the strategy context, half in the WU “Digital Economy” Master program, the other half at Master-level (Master program “Strategy, Innovation and Management Control”) and Bachelor-level at the department.
  • Collaborate with incumbents in teaching
  • Independently supervise Bachelor's and Master's theses on digital strategy and adjacent fields
  • Contribute to the further development of study programs and courses
  • Demonstrate an active commitment to academic self-governance and the administration of the Institute
  • Engage in Third Mission activities

What you have to offer

  • PhD degree (or equivalent) in business or a related field
  • Applicants must either have completed their PhD or doctoral program abroad or must have completed at least one year of documented academic work experience as a post-doctoral researcher abroad.
  • At least one academic research paper (“job market paper”) which has been published or is publishable in a leading management journal and which connects to one or more (preferred) of the positions’ research foci
  • A strong commitment to high-quality research on digital strategy as well as evidence of ability to conduct impactful research and to publish in top journals
  • Contributions to and recognitions by the international management community (e.g., through serving at Editorial Boards, guest editing special issues, organizing sessions and/or workshops at leading management conferences, ad-hoc reviewing for leading management journals, or being awarded visiting fellowships and/or prices)
  • Solid expertise in applying data analytical methods and established empirical research methods to examine questions pertaining to strategic management
  • Considerable teaching experience (including thesis supervision) in relevant areas at Master-level (preferred) and Bachelor-level
  • Speak English fluently. Non-German speaking applicants are expected to acquire knowledge of workable German in due course.
  • Willingness to use multimedia teaching methods: You are prepared to use multimedia teaching and learning formats.
The successful candidate is not required to meet the following criteria but doing so would be an advantage:
  • Experience in successfully attracting third-party research funds
  • Experience in supporting and guiding PhD students and/or postdoctoral researchers
  • Experience in developing new courses on digital strategy and related fields
  • Proven commitment to academic self-governance and/or Institute administration
  • Experience in integrating incumbents in teaching activities
  • Experience in collaborative interdisciplinary teaching on one or more of the positions’ research foci
  • Experience in Third Mission activities

The minimum monthly gross salary amounts to €4.351,90 (14 times per year) - the actual annual gross salary is subject to negotiation. This salary may be adjusted based on equivalent prior work experience. In addition, we offer a wide range of attractive social benefits.
